We recently headed back to Chester Zoo to check out it’s Easter offerings – The Really Wild Egg Trail. We haven’t been back to Chester Zoo since Lanterns and Light over Christmas, so we were long overdue a visit, and its always a fantastic place to spend a morning or afternoon on a random weekend. Weather has been improving too, which always helps.

Really Wild Egg Trail
The zoo usually puts on seasonal events and this Easter’s offering was the Really Wild Egg Trail. The kids were given a sheet to fill in with some true or false answers, and it was their job to follow the trail to get the answers.
Along the trail were giant painted eggs, decorated as a toad, flamingo, penguin, sea horse, snails and a leopard. The final egg being one you could get inside for a picture, decorated as a kangaroo. Each egg had an info board to help you answer the true/false question about that animal and fill in your sheet. At the end of the trail, you could take you sheet into the gift shop and trade it in for a lolly. Not one of those cheapo small ones, but one of the big, chunky ones like a piece of rock that probably costs a fiver in the gift shop.
Easter Rides
Another addition for the Easter period were some fairground rides. In the centre, near the end of the trail, next to the Oakfield Pub, you could find a carousel, trampoline and a helter skelter. I think they were the same ones that were here over Lanterns. Each ride cost £4 per ticket.

Breakfast With The Rhinos
Not part of the Easter experience, but while we were there, we visited Bembe Grill for breakfast. The Cafe is open before the zoo itself, so you can get in a bit earlier and grab a bite. It was fairly quiet when we arrived so we could grab a seat anywhere. We chose to sit near the back. Luckily while we were there, the rhinos were out and about, pacing like they were waiting for their own breakfast. Not often you get to eat your breakfast with a rhino view.

Ordering can be done at the counter or via the qr code on the table which takes you to the app. There was a large queue of people buying drinks, so we ordered via the app and service was pretty swift, The food was reasonably priced and good quality too. One of us had the breakfast at £9.95, which included bacon, sausage, beans, egg, has brown, tomato, mushrooms and toast. The rest of us had the muffin option at £8.95, which was bacon or a sausage patty with a hash brown, cheese and mini omelette in a toasted muffin. The muffin option also came with a refillable hot drink. Good food with a great view.

See Any Animals?
Of course! Not many, but some. We were only there for the morning, but we did get up close with the Komodo dragon, saw the snow leopards lazing in the distance, and saw the flamingos, penguins (still not a fan of the big nets over the enclosure, but it’s there for a reason), rhinos, red panda, cassowary, warty pigs and a few others as we passed by.
How Was Chester Zoo At Easter?
The egg trail was only a short experience, but it was nice and gets the kids out of the house and they got a decent gift at the end too. Elliott loved the painted eggs and was actually happy to walk around the zoo for a change (he can get a little fed up of the zoo as there’s no rollercoasters).
Chester Zoo is always a lovely and well looked after place to visit, and breakfast by the rhinos was definitely a highlight on this trip. We’ll have to do that again!
